You were a huge part of my fandom, especially when you dished out the epic Thuganomics persona. And now as you hang your boots and call it a legendary career, we wish you’d still go and wrestle for at least another 5 years—but you deserve to go out in your own terms. As for your match with Gunther tonight, I don’t agree with the tapout, but you probably wanted that too. You really are a pro’s pro, Cena, regardless of how badly the WWE Universe wanted you to win your final match.

John Cena retained his Undisputed WWE Championship against CM Punk at Night of Champions, as expected. The feud was short for my liking, as I would’ve love to see them continue going at it for a few more weeks. Cena’s Pipebomb and Punk’s Basic Punkanomics promos brought out the best in this heel run by the GOAT. Ron Killings added some fire into it too I should say.

John Cena recreating CM Punk’s Pipebomb with his own spicy version this past SmackDown was something I didn’t expect to happen at all! IT WAS GENIUS. Now, I can’t wait to see Mr. TKO’s response (LOL), and how this match will unfold at Night of Champions. There are rumors of a double turn, with John Cena getting screwed, while CM Punk making good at Cena’s stab at him, turning heel and becoming “Mr. TKO” for real. A corporate version of Punk could make for some very intriguing television. The Rock could even make a surprise appearance and anoint CM Punk as a TKO representative officially.

As for who’s retaining, if the double turn doesn’t happen, John Cena easily. That will set him up for another one-on-one showdown against King of the Ring-favorite Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam, though I wouldn’t mind Randy Orton winning it and watch him and Cena have another go for the Undisputed WWE Title.

THE GOAT John Cena 17th WWE Championship Wallpaper

Gone are the bright lights and the upbeat emotions—it was all pure disdain for the fans and Cody Rhodes. John Cena entered the ring not looking to entertain and celebrate his last WrestleMania with the WWE Universe. Instead, he ‘marched’ his way to a dark and minimalist black arena, no spotlights nor fireworks whatsoever. It was quite a sharp contrast to how John Cena presented himself in years past on the grandest stage of them all. The version of John Cena we saw at WrestleMania 41 was willing to win at any cost… and win he did.

He made good on his promise of dethroning Cody Rhodes, even if it was in controversial fashion. Wasn’t a fan of how anticlimactic the ending was, and Travis Scott being heavily involved in there didn’t feel right to me. Where’s the Final Boss? Why isn’t The Rock in all of these, or maybe even just a few minutes of this match? Regardless of how the fight was booked, John Cena has now surpassed Ric Flair, and deservedly so. All the years of work Cena have put in for WWE, he’s truly now the GOAT!

That back-and-forth promo battle between John Cena and Cody Rhodes was fire! It showed Cody Rhodes as legit main event material, and can hang with the very best. John Cena brought out one of his best promos to date too. That interaction including the post-promo Cross Rhodes to Cena were badly needed ignite fuel to this feud that felt lacking something these past weeks. Add to it that The Final Boss is nowhere to be seen, and it made the ‘John sold his soul’ an afterthought. The build is still much to be desired, but at least we got some real heated exchange before their much-awaited match in 2 weeks.

John Cena HEEL TURN! Sold his soul to the Final Boss!

Just when you thought Cody Rhodes is about to align with the Final Boss and start his Homelander run, John Cena pulls off a shocking HEEL TURN and flips the wrestling world upside down! Many are comparing it to Hulk Hogan’s heel turn and rightfully so. Both are beloved babyfaces for such a long time, then unexpectedly becoming villains. As the popular line says: “You live long enough to see yourself become a villain”. In both cases, it turned out true.

I can see 2 stories being told here. In a storyline perspective, John Cena was so desperate that he sold his soul to the Final Boss to make sure he gets his 17th World Championship before he retires. Remember, he hasn’t won a meaningful singles match in years..was it 2018? That’s a very long singles losing streak. After getting eliminated by Jey Uso in the Royal Rumble, that probably set him over the edge. Looking back at post-match conference he had at the time, I can see now that it was a prelude of him going heel.

The other story is WWE going all-in on their support for Cody Rhodes. For them to allow John Cena to go heel (heck even during his retirement tour), it feels like WWE is saying that they have full confidence that Rhodes can take over Cena’s previous role. Building Cody into an underdog babyface that goes against a power trip duo of The Rock and John Cena is creative genius. This should be fun in the coming months! Also, this paves the way for Cody Rhodes to eventually turn heel as well, as he has been betrayed multiple times already since coming back to WWE. He’ll be fed up at some point, and we’ll probably see the Homelander version of him we’ve been all waiting for when that time comes.
